In July 1988, the National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc. censured the broker related to a letter about a Disney-backed movie partnership.
In August 2007, the State of Ohio, Department of Commerce opened an investigation alleging the following: “the State of Ohio issued a notice of intent to revoke Ohio license and notice of opportunity for hearing based upon four matters during the past 19 years previously disclosed on Mr. Knutson’s CRD.” He was sanctioned to withdraw his securities license in Ohio and to not reapply for one year.

He has been the subject of three customer complaints between 2004 and 2023, according to his CRD report. The most recent complaint was regarding:
July 2023. “Claimants allege, inter alia, Excessive trading with respect to investments – 2013 to 2022.” The customer is seeking $44,015,038 in damages, and the case is currently pending. The complaint was related to common and preferred shares of stock losses, and it took place while he was registered with Morgan Stanley.
Pursuant to FINRA Rules, member firms are responsible for supervising a broker’s activities during the time the broker is registered with the firm. Therefore, Morgan Stanley may be liable for investment or other losses suffered by Robert Knutson’s customers.
